Esports: Passion or Addiction?

In late November 2023, XPBOOST Founder Damien Andrews had the incredible opportunity to attend the International Esports Federation World Esports Summit, an event that brought together the brightest minds in the esports and gaming industry. The summit aimed to foster collaboration and knowledge exchange among players, coaches, parents, organizations, and federations.

The two-day event was filled with captivating content. On the first day, a crucial topic took center stage – “Esports: Passion or Addiction?” Esteemed panelists, including Elaine Uskoski, Eunkyoung Choi, Laura Byrne, Youenn Rocaboy, and Mario Agudelo, engaged in discussions regarding the positive aspects of the esports scene and its potential impact on players’ well-being. Elaine shared a heartfelt account of her journey with her son, who faced gaming addiction, emphasizing the significance of parents recognizing signs, establishing boundaries, and guiding their children through their gaming experiences.

A research review by Mohammed et al. (2023) stressed the parallels between video game addiction and substance addiction, citing studies that demonstrated changes in the brain comparable to those seen in substance abuse and gambling. The research also linked video game addiction to depression and various psychological and social issues. Recognizing the gravity of these findings, health and well-being coaches, such as those at XPBOOST, conduct workshops within the community to raise awareness of addiction signs and their detrimental effects on mental and physical well-being.

These workshops also serve as a platform to involve parents in the conversation, empowering them to understand the gaming landscape better. Despite good intentions, many parents inadvertently expose their children to excessive gaming, leading to potential addiction issues. By collaborating with performance coaches, players can benefit from well-structured programs that take a holistic approach to gaming. Moreover, working closely with in-game coaches ensures that the hours spent playing are utilized effectively, focusing on skill development rather than mindless gaming.

It’s crucial to distinguish between casual gaming and playing at a high standard as a professional player. The summit underscored the importance of responsible gaming practices, bringing attention to the need for comprehensive support systems to guide players and their families through the dynamic world of esports. As the industry continues to grow, events like these play a vital role in shaping a healthier and more sustainable gaming landscape for everyone involved.
